Desktop Soccer Building Blocks

The keeper is the whole thing. He doesn't stand still and he doesn't stop, so every shot is a timing problem rather than an aiming one — which is why this holds up after the tenth go instead of the second.

• The goalkeeper moves — he tracks left and right across the goalmouth on his own. Wait for the gap, or watch him swallow it.
• Four kick buttons — spring-loaded, positioned around the pitch, each giving a different angle on goal. Pure mechanical: press and the ball goes.
• Twin scoring dials — one per player. Turn yours when you score.
• Lit trophy — a gold cup with its own spotlight, standing over the pitch. Most desk games have no way to say you won. This one does.
• Stadium lighting — twist-on LED bricks around the pitch.
• Sound — kick and crowd effects fire as you play.
• Guard fencing — yellow barriers keep the balls on the pitch instead of under the sofa.

1. Set a ball in the launch position under one of the kick buttons.
2. Watch the keeper. He's moving the entire time.
3. Press the button when the gap opens — hard enough to send it, not hard enough to hurt the mechanism.
4. Score, and turn your dial forward one.
5. Alternate turns. Most goals after an agreed number of rounds wins, and the trophy is right there to make the point.

Head-to-head is what the twin dials are built for, but larger groups can rotate through and reset between rounds. Solo, the four kick positions give you four different problems to solve — which one you can beat the keeper from most reliably becomes its own thing.

This one is large

Assembled, the pitch is 21.4 inches wide and 13 inches deep — noticeably bigger than a laptop and the largest set we make. It's also the heaviest at 8.3 lb boxed. Measure the surface it's going to live on before you order, and plan on leaving it out rather than putting it away.

Batteries aren't included

You'll need 6 × AAA for the lights and sound. Loose batteries can't travel by international air freight, so no set ships with them — any standard alkaline AAA will do. The kicking mechanism itself needs no power.

You assemble the electronics yourself

The LED bricks, speaker and wiring arrive as individual parts, not a sealed module. Fitting them is part of the build, and the printed manual marks every connection point.

Small parts

The set includes small brick footballs and fine mechanical pieces. Rated 14+ and not suitable for young children.

Press, don't slam

The kick buttons sit on brick-built spring mechanisms. They take normal firm pressure all day; they don't enjoy being hammered. Worth mentioning to anyone competitive who gets hold of it.

2,247 pieces, most of them doing a job

This is a bigger and more mechanical build than a display model, because almost all of it has to function at the end. The keeper's slide rail, four independent spring launchers, the ratchets under the scoring dials — every one is brick-built, and you test them as you go rather than discovering a problem on the last page.

Bricks and fit

All 2,247 pieces are molded in ABS to a tight clutch tolerance. That matters more on a game than on a shelf piece — this thing gets pressed, knocked and argued over, so the joints have to hold through repeated play. Everything still comes apart cleanly if you want to rebuild.

Compatibility

Planning modifications?

Dust with a soft dry cloth and keep liquid away from the LED, speaker and trophy light entirely. Press the kick buttons rather than slamming them — the springs and the gearing underneath will last far longer for it. Keep the stadium out of prolonged direct sunlight so the black and green bricks hold their color, and collect the balls off the floor before someone finds one barefoot.

Does it work without batteries?

Partly. The four spring launchers and the scoring dials are purely mechanical, so you can kick and keep score with no power at all. The goalkeeper, however, is motor-driven — without batteries he stands still, which turns a timing game into target practice. You'll want the six AAAs in for the real thing.

How much space does it need?

About 21 inches wide by 13 inches deep, standing under 8 inches tall. It's the largest set we make — worth measuring your surface before ordering.

Why four kick buttons?

Each sits at a different position around the pitch, so each gives a different angle on goal. Some are far more forgiving than others once the keeper is moving, which is where the game gets interesting.

Can more than two people play?

The console has two dials, so head-to-head is what it's built for. With a bigger group, take turns and reset the dials between rounds.

Why aren't batteries included?

Loose batteries can't be sent by international air freight. Standard alkaline AAA from any supermarket will do.

Do I have to wire the electronics myself?

Yes. The LED bricks, speaker and wiring come as separate parts and are fitted during the build. The printed manual marks each connection point step by step, so no prior experience is needed.

How long does the build take?

At 2,247 pieces it's a substantial project — expect to spread it over more than one sitting. Much of that time goes into the working mechanisms rather than the outer stadium.

How does it compare with the basketball arcade?

Same idea, different problem. The basketball machine gives you one launcher and a hoop that slides; this one gives you four kick positions and a keeper actively defending the goal. This is the larger of the two and the harder to score on.

Is it a good gift?

It's one of the easiest sets to give, because the person opening it gets two things — a build to sit down with, and something the whole room will want a turn on afterwards. It lands well for birthdays, Christmas and office desks.
